Requirements to Become a Pet Sitter
- Love for Animals: A passion for animals is essential, as you’ll be working closely with pets of varying breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
- Reliability and Trustworthiness: Pet owners entrust their pets to you, so it’s crucial to be reliable, trustworthy, and respectful of their pets and property.
- Basic Animal Care Knowledge: Familiarity with animal behaviour, health, and nutrition is necessary to provide quality care.
- Attend a short interview (we want to meet you!)
- Sign an Agreement (standard stuff).
- Provide a current Police Clearance & one form of photo ID.
- If accepted, pay a once-off refundable bond ($300 per single sitter or $450 per couple). This is because you will be staying in other people’s homes for free and as a company, we need to have this safe-guard process in place. It also is an Insurance Requirement and gives you the peace of mind, so for example, if you accidentally spill something on the carpet, then you are insured. 😊
Understanding Animal Behaviour & Body Language
One of the most critical pet sitting skills is understanding animal behaviour and body language. This knowledge enables you to:
- Recognize signs of stress, anxiety, or fear in pets
- Develop strategies to calm and comfort them
- Identify potential health issues and take preventative measures
- Provide tailored care and attention to meet individual pets’ needs
Pet Health and Nutrition Knowledge
Pet sitters must possess a good understanding of pet health and nutrition to provide optimal care. This includes:
- Familiarity with common health issues, such as diabetes, arthritis, and allergies.
- Knowledge of nutrition requirements for different life stages, breeds, and health conditions.
- Ability to administer medication and provide special dietary care.
- Understanding of pet first aid and emergency procedures .
